What the Islamic State is after

There's a remarkable article in the March Atlantic in which Graeme Wood summarized the world view of Islamic State, whose name alone ought to convince President Obama's that the enemy has something to do with, uh, you know -- Islam?

In a very few months, Islamic State has taken advantage of our retreat from Iraq to take control of a putative nation that is larger than England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Island combined. Mr Wood summarizes this nation's foreign policy as follows:

We can gather that their state rejects peace as a matter of principle; that it hungers for genocide; that its religious views make it constitutionally incapable of certain types of change, even if that change might ensure its survival; and that it considers itself a harbinger of—and headline player in—the imminent end of the world.
Are you listening, Mr Obama?
