The American heroes of Lwow

The things we learn on Facebook! The American adventurer, film producer, and pilot Merian Cooper was stationed in Lwow during the Russo-Polish War. He was one of sixteen Americans who flew for Poland against Russian cavalry, 1919-1920. Three of them were buried in Lwow: Edmund Graves of Boston, Arthur Kelly of Richmond, and G. MacCallum of Detroit.

Captain Cooper returned home to produce  King Kong and other films, and later to serve in China under Claire Chennault of the Flying Tigers -- but not before he fathered a son who became a noted writer and the translator of Ulysses into Polish. We are all connected, one way or another.... Blue skies! -- Dan Ford
