As Mr. Obama and the U.S. Congress go through their circus act, everything hinges upon their inability to reach a Big Deal. Why not just kick the can down the road a bit? Raise the debt ceiling by a mere trillion dollars with no tax increases and few or no spending cuts. Then have the argument again next summer when the prospect of elections in November will have clarified the minds of the president, the House of Representatives, and a third of the U.S. Senate.
