The Axis of Engagement

Okay, it's official! The Bush era is over, and the 44th president of the United States has flown to North Korea to wheedle the release of two American journalists recently sentenced to twelve years' hard labor for the unforgivable crime of writing about conditions in the Hermit Kingdom. From the look of the young woman at left, the Dear Leader knows just how to win the heart of the former president! One hopes he won't defect, and that the fix is already in: 'Send us George Bush to kowtow, and you can have the running dogs of journalism.' 'No, Dubya is otherwise engaged, but will you take Bill Clinton?' 'Oh, all right!'

Proof of the pudding, and all that. Still, it seemed less demeaning when it was private citizens like Jesse Jackson who did the wheedling. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford
