was Shakespeare a hottie?

The New York Times has a charming story this morning about a portrait recently "discovered" in Ireland--well, not discovered, exactly. The portrait, which scholars believe to shown William Shakespeare in his mid-forties, has been in in the same family for four hundred years: they knew they had it, but not that it might show the man who gave us half the quotations we mangle in daily use. The NYT spins the yarn into extended digressions on Elizabethan portraiture and the Bard's purported bisexuality, but to a shallow movie-goer the fun part is that the guy is handsome! He has a full head of hair! No wonder Gwyneth Paltrow fell in love with him. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford
