Why won't they make peace?
When Putin stupidly misjudged his western neighbor and invaded in the belief his "special military operation" would take only a few days, I subscribed to all sorts of publications: the New York Times, the Washington Post, the inestimable Kyiv Independent, and most recently the National Review, in addition to my go-to daily, the Wall Street Journal. Bill Buckley's magazine has given me best value. Just this morning I read the finest essay of 2024: "The World, Yesterday and Today," by Jay Nordlinger, who among much else says this:
"Newspapers can barely bestir themselves to report on the latest inhumanity in Ukraine — the latest bombing of a school, say. And people are often peeved to hear about it. Why don’t the Ukrainians just give in and end the war? Why won’t they make peace? (Ukrainians, among others, know that “peace” under Russian occupation can be even worse than war.)"
It will appear in the January issue, and alone is worth the price of a subscription.
