I started this blog because something of the sort was required of students at King's College London in its online M.A. program in War in the Modern World. Of course it proved to be addictive. So here I am, long since graduated (M.A. 2010) but still blogging. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford

The decision to abandon Afghanistan was made by the previous administration, which drew troops down by 80% and made an agreement with the Afghan government. Biden's choices were to either have the US renege on its agreement or re-escalate the war by redeploying thousands of troops again. In the end, after 20 years and three trillion dollars spent on training and arms, the Afghan troops cut and ran. If the Afghans themselves aren't committed to their own freedom why should we be involved?
