If only we mean it!

 

The year has been full of astonishments, from Putin's brutal invasion of Ukraine to that country's heroic resistance and the eloquence of President Zelensky, the stiffening attitude of Berlin, Washington, and even the Vatican ... but nothing compares to this headline in the Wall Street Journal yesterday. Nancy Pelosi! A Congressional delegation! They dared speak the word: victory! I waited twenty-four hours in case they walked it back, but no, there it remains: victory. Let's pray that it be so.

Ms Pelosi would of course have doubled her impact if she'd had the courtesy to invite a few Republicans along for her junket to Kyiv and Warsaw. But we can't have everything. A country goes to war with the leaders it has.
