"Now get to class"

Was there ever a finer conclusion to a college speech than the one given by Dartmouth's president the other day?

Philip Hanlon was being pressured by the faculty and some of the more enlightened students to join the parade toward shutting down free speech and free association on campus, in this case by banning fraternities. He responded by banning hard liquor at social events. Now Dartmouth's hard-eyed rapists will have to depend on wine or beer to get the girls swozzled (not a bad idea, actually). But what really made me want to raise a glass to Mr Hanlon was his concluding sentence:

"Now get to class."
Indeed, most of the ills of academia would be cured by that four-word guideline.
