The Siletz Warriors are insensitive

The state of Oregon last week required that its schools get rid of any names or images that refer to the Indian tradition--or, in PC Speak, to Native Americans. One of the schools affected by the ban is the Siletz Valley Early College Academy, whose mascot is the warrior chief shown above. Does it offend anyone? Apparently not the Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians, whose chairman is among those protesting the ban. Retorts a member of the state Board of Education: "it was imperative that we pass this rule and resolution to remove the use of Native American mascots in our schools." If the Warriors do not stop trampling upon the sensitivities of the Good People in Portland, the academy will lose all state funding. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford
