Burma, happy once again

After half a century of thuggish misrule by a cabal of hermit-generals, Burma is celebrating the apparent victory of Aung San Suu Kyi, the brave woman who has symbolized opposition to the junta for many years. If this is true--if the generals don't turn their machine guns on the populace as they have done in the past--I hope liberation works out better for the Burmese than it has for the Egyptians!

And you know what else I hope? The generals gave Burma the new name of Myanmar. I hope Aung San Suu Kyi turns the name back again. But whether she does or not -- Blue skies to the country that also calls itself the Golden Land! -- Dan Ford
