A wise Latina overturned

The US Supreme Court yesterday ruled in favor of the firefighters of New Haven who were refused promotion because they were white. (They passed the test; the test was thrown out because the fire department thought it needed racial diversity among its officers.) Famously, Sonia Sotomayor as a federal appeals judge voted to uphold the city's decision. Now she has been overturned by the Supreme Court, where she has been nominated to serve. Can you imagine what the NYT and other voices of the Good People would have made of that irony, had it happened to one of Dubya's nominees?

Sotomayor's presence on the court wouldn't have changed the result, since she is to replace David Souter, who voted in the minority. Also in the minority was Ruth Ginsburg, suggesting that although a 'wise Latina woman' might not reach the same decision as Chief Justice Roberts, she will indeed vote in harmony with the wise Jewish mother. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford
